Home Lighting – How Much Is Enough?




A poorly lit room is much like a picnic in the rain! A well-thought-out combination of well-distributed lighting from ceiling to mid-wall height gives your design life. Built-in lighting or track lighting, chandeliers or pedant lighting (upper center plane) floor and table lamps; accent or task lighting and wall sconces create adjustable laundry and accent lighting where you need it.

The output of light is measured in lumens per watt (LPW). The recommendation for lighting per square foot varies depending on the task, and the guidelines vary depending on the state. But let's simplify and go on average between 15 and 35 lumens per square foot, depending on which "zone" you illuminate. It is obvious that you need brighter work-oriented lighting in work zones (kitchen, living room, office) with more restful light levels in the bedrooms.

So how much lighting is right for your room?

General lighting for this restful bedroom retreat, we calculate 15 lumens per square meter. General lighting (see diagram) illuminates mid 3 & # 39; in a medium room with 9 & # 39; roof.

* 306 square meters x 15 lumens per sf is 4590 lumens

* Share 4590 at 1690 (1 average bulb)

* You need 2.92 beads rounded up = 3/1690 lumens (100 watts) bulbs

It is said that many light sources tend to "spill" light and face that a 100 watt bulb effectively illuminates about 75% of our 15-35 lumens per square foot.

So the correct formula is:

Number of lumens – divided by watt x.25 (to compensate for Light spill) = NUMBER OF BULBS NEEDED.

To achieve ambient lighting (see diagram) let's add dimmable brake lights or track lighting. A typical 4-inch fixture is separated 4 meters apart (6 "fixtures about 6 meters apart). For discussion, let's use a 40 watt bulb from the chart.

* 306 & # 39; divided by 4 & # 39; (4 "recessed cans at distances 4") = 76.5 s.f.

* 76.5 s.f. divided by 40 (watts) = 5.1 light bulbs (5 light bulbs)

Now, if 5 lights illuminate effectively 75% of each square foot (due to light spillage)

75% of 5 (use 5 fixtures x.25, it is correct and simple) = 1.25, so you need 1 extra fixture:
